Pulp + Peel Spring/Summer 2013

As we welcome in Spring, I would like to introduce you to a fresh new face on the scene today. Cue, Kiara Nalli. A recent graduate from Savannah College of Art Design, Ms. Nalli’s new Spring collection, Pulp + Peel,  mimics the beauty and allure of exotic fruit,  bringing a mouthwatering vision to her garments.

At the photoshoot for her new collection, I got the chance to sit down and talk with Ms. Nalli about her inspiration.

TF: Kiara, while capturing images of your designs, I began longing for the warm summer months- the bright palettes and soft materials had me envisioning a warm spring day! Tell me, what was the creative process like?

KN: I was enthralled with the beauty of the inside of fruit, especially exotic fruit such as papayas, dragon fruits and kiwanos. Inside there are so many delicate layers and organic shapes, full of amazing textures and colors. Then you have this rough, leathery outside which acts as the protector. The outside shell holds such rich life inside. I wanted to mix these two elements. Soft lambskin leather and a creamy python play the part of the outer shell in my collection.

It was the cracking into the shell of the fruit and being amazed by the flowing juices that inspired the overall color of the collection. I actually designed all of my own prints to mimic the inside body of a fruit- the flesh, seeds, pulp. I choose to use soft sheer silks to play off the delicate layers of the inside of fruit; how the skin of their pulp and segments are so soft and transparent. I find the inside of fruits to portray a woman. So a lot of the drapes and shapes found in the garments are soft and curvaceous. I used silk chiffon, silk organza, silk crepe de chine, and even a soft Italian wool for the knits.  All the garments go together and the dream of the collection is to have the woman use the different layers as a way to fashion multiple looks.

Kiara Nalli now resides in NYC designing fresh new looks. You can contact her at kiararnalli@gmail.com.

Many thanks to our models Megan Cylkowski and Katelyn Brech and my Stylist Kathleen. It's such a pleasure to work with all of you!
